Railroads have long played a key role in livestock transportation. In the early days of perishable shipments, freshness was ensured if livestock could be delivered to market on the hoof. Stock cars were developed to meet this need. Southern Pacific, with over 11,000 miles of track, has been a major mover of livestock.

It was built in April 1936, serviced in April 1955, and ran the Pocahontas District on Bettendorf trucks. It was rostered by Chesapeake & Ohio® as a member of the 95300-95349 series.

Canadian National

It was built in May 1929, serviced in April 1961, and runs on Bettendorf trucks. This is one of 150 stock cars converted from series 503500-505850; they were steel frame box cars built in 1929. They were later renumbered to series 810500-810638.

Pennsylvania Railroad

They are steel framed and wood lined with all-steel roof and single 6' door. Until the early 1960s, when stock traffic declined, solid stock trains were fairly common during the Fall and Spring months. They are painted freight car red with white lettering and a white circle keystone logo. They ride on Bettendorf trucks.

Union Pacific

They bear logos and lettering in yellow. They were built in January 1952 and run on Bettendorf trucks. U.P. 48199 was one of an order for 500 double deck cars built at Omaha in 1951-52. Double deck stock cars were used to handle hogs or sheep.

Baltimore & Ohio

Built in 1915 as part of series 11000-11449 they helped B&O® provide safer, more efficient transportation of all manner of livestock.

Rebuilt in the mid-1950s at the Council Bluffs shop, these single deck stock cars were sold to United States Railway Equipment and then leased back to CNW for use across the Midwest.
