You're all familiar with the Glen Alden Coal Company's method of staining their anthracite BLUE as it left the chutes of their Huber Breaker. This was a remarkably successful marketing ploy, advertised on radio and in newspapers during the 1930's and 40's for their home-heating fuel. Some years ago, Full Throttle produced a 'blue coal' hopper using the actual logos of the product. Well, sales of 'blue coal' were so prosperous that other Coal Companies just had to get in on this "colored coal" craze. For one, the Reading Coal Company (Phila. & Reading Coal & Iron Co.), not to be confused with the Reading Railroad, in order to capitalize on the "colored coal" fad, started to stain their anthracite, RED! Yes, and their trademark stated, "When It's RED, It's READING!" This merchandising strategy worked very well for the Southeastern Pennsylvania area, Reading/Allentown, Philadelphia, Central New Jersey and Delaware/Maryland, a local ready-made client base for home heating fuel, easily served by railroad! Full Throttle has now brought a "red coal" hopper to the Z Scale hobby! The fantastic loads were created by Hay Brothers!
