#UP 9149
Painted gray with red The Challenger logo and white lettering. Built 9/39 on Roller Bearing trucks. With the trucking industry becoming a threat, the UP needed to retain business where the haul was less than 500 miles. This created the “Over Night Delivery” concept to meet the demand for next day delivery. The UP called it their “Challenger Merchandise Service”. The cars were to travel with the passenger trains between overnight terminals. Since they were used in special service with passenger freight, the paint scheme had to match/blend with the passenger color scheme and yet be distinctive enough for the UP personnel.

Built 6/45 by Pullman-Standard, serviced 6/78, on Bettendorf trucks. Fe-26 class auto cars, series 64200-64699, were the last 40’ double door purchased by SF; automobiles grew rapidly in size after WWII and the SF began using 50’ cars for automobiles. The entire Fe-26 class continued in auto rack service until the 1950s when renumbering began. 299 cars from the series were shifted to general purpose lading and renumbered 50001-50309. The number of Fe-26s in revenue service declined in the 1970s, all were retired by 1985.

#WP 18501
Painted brown with yellow ‘Feather River Route’ logo and lettering. It was built in 3/45 by the Mount Vernon Car Company, rebuilt in 2/55, and runs the Southwestern District on Bettendorf trucks. In 1955 the WP had Paragon shops rebuild five 50-ton box cars from the 20201 series with six-foot double Doors and equip them to handle automobile transmissions for the new Ford plant in Milpitas, CA. These five cars were repainted with the “Feather River Route” mid-1950s scheme and renumbered into series 18501-18505.
