In an effort to develop a new paint scheme, Great Northern decorated a number of box cars in different experimental paint schemes in 1956 and sent them across the GN network for feedback. Due to the bright and gaudy colors, this group of cars were dubbed the “Circus Cars”.

Originally built in 1942 for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, this 40’ box car was put into lumber service by Northern Pacific between 1961 and 1963.

Baltimore & Ohio

#MTL-501 00 291   Baltimore & Ohio   • Released February 2020   $26.40 retail ea. #501 00 291 #B&O 294201 #501 00 292 #B&O 294212 These 40’ standard box cars with double doors are brown with white lettering and run on Bettendorf trucks. Built in 1947, this double-door boxcar advertised the B&O’s Sentinel Service, a Less-than-Carload service that allowed express, siding-to-siding shipments. With a 100,000-pound capacity, this car also featured Sparton SEL loaders with 17 belts to facilitate car servicing.

Union Pacific

#MTL-501 00 301   Union Pacific   • Released February 2020   $29.95 retail ea. • $23.96 #501 00 301 #UP 519086 #501 00 302 #UP 519120 These 40’ standard box cars with double doors are aluminum with yellow sides and black lettering and run on Bettendorf trucks. Built by Pullman-Standard in March 1947, this A-50-19 double-door 40’ boxcar was owned by Union Pacific and placed in Pool Service for Marion, Ohio appliance manufacturers, serviced by Erie Lackawanna.
