NP's North Coast Ltd. ran from Chicago to Seattle and Portland. In 1948 the heavyweight train was replaced with lightweight cars that ran with daily service. In 1952, the classic two-tone green paint scheme was created by Raymond Loewy. In 1954 dome coaches and dome sleepers were added. In 1955 the streamlined makeover was completed when the buffet lounge cars were added and diners were replaced in 1958. About 1967, the decline in passenger traffic required that the North Coast Ltd. be combined with Great Northern's Empire Builder.

 In the late 1930s Santa Fe’s passenger cars began to modernize with the introduction of the fluted-side Budd Passenger cars. Faced with integrating their smooth-side Pullman Standard cars into the consist, the company decided to repaint the cars silver with faux fluting details using black faded stripes to match the Budd cars. This was known as Shadow-Striping and remained on the cars well into the 1950s.
