These box car red 40’ flat cars with white “RIO GRANDE” speed lettering and white stenciling were built by American Car & Foundry in March 1956. They run on black Bettendorf trucks. With a capacity of 100,000, and load limit of 115,800 they are typical examples of general purpose flat cars with simple decks and minimal amount of load securing equipment.

These flat cars with lumber loads are painted UP Synthetic Red with white herald and lettering. They were built in 1951 at the UP Shops in Denver, CO. They ran from 1951 through the 1970s on Bettendorf trucks. Union Pacific constructed the F-50-15 flatcars by purchasing underframe castings from General Steel Castings in Granite City, IL. According to the 1966 ORER, by April 1975 only 364 cars of the series 51000-51500 remained in service.
