The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (DRGW), " Through the Rockies," was a major origin of coal and mineral traffic, and the epitome of mountain railroading, operating the highest mainline rail line in the USA. In 1988, Rio Grande, purchased the Southern Pacific Railroad. The unified company took the Southern Pacific name due to its recognition among shippers. By the early 1990s, D&RGW became largely dependent on hauling high-quality coal from the mine fields of Colorado and Utah.  In 1996 D&RGW was sold and merged into the Union Pacific Railroad.

Peabody Energy Corporation headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, is the largest private-sector coal company in the world. It's primary business consists of the mining, sale and distribution of coal, which is purchased for use in electricity generation and steelmaking. Peabody also markets, brokers and trades coal through offices in China, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, India, Singapore, and the United States. The coal produced by Peabody Energy fuels approximately 10% of the electricity generated in the United States and 2% of electricity generated throughout the world. Peabody markets coal to electricity generating and industrial customers in more than 25 nations on six continents.
"It occurs to me that despite however spectacular these Peabody hoppers display in long consists, the cars were so omnipresent that they appeared not only on the major rail lines, but also on myriad short lines all around the USA!  The Peabody Coal Company, now Peabody Energy, is responsible for supplying coal to a vast network of energy facilities, covering some 35 States in the US and visible in 16 Countries around the world.  So, I often think of these hoppers in multi-car linkups!  But as attested by the following photo, you might just as often see a neat short line engine hauling but a couple of these cars along for dumping at smaller plants or distributors." The Virginian Railway (VGN) was created in 1907 to haul quality "smokeless" Bituminous coal from previously untapped Southern West Virginia through Virginia to it's Atlantic ports at Hampton Roads! It's great success was due to the clever engineers who designed the route as straight and flat as could be, as if the Virginia hills did not exist. With this modern infrastructure and fleet of Fairbanks-Morse diesels, the VGN became the model of efficiency, out-competing it's much larger rivals. Long lusted by the N&W, the VGN merged with them in 1959. Eventually, as part of the Norfolk Southern, the VGN was mothballed in 2015 because of the lack in demand for coal shipments. Full Throttle brings you a pair of VGN 70-ton hoppers preferred for the trip across Virginia. Hay Brothers created the Coal loads.

The UNION PACIFIC (UP), headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, is the largest Railroad Network in the USA, operating 8,000 locomotives over 32,000 route-miles west of the Mississippi River! Begun in 1862, UP grew by acquiring, one-by-one, almost all the large Rail Companies of the Western States. UP and competitor BNSF have a duopoly on all transcontinental freight rail lines in the USA. UP ran a fleet of the 70-Ton Hoppers from the 1930's through the Diesel Era of the 1960's when even larger hoppers were constructed and rotary dumping came into favor. Here's a Special Edition of Rib-Side, 70-Ton, 3-Bay Hoppers from Full Throttle with coal loads crafted by Hay Brothers. The set #2 is in very short supply so purchase wisely!

Taking it's name from the former Line which it bought from the Norfolk and Western in 1990, the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway (WE) is a regional freight railroad providing service mainly in Ohio, but also PA and WV. W&LE routes interchange with three major railroads (Canadian National Railway, CSX Transportation, and Norfolk Southern Railway). Many of the major commodities remain the same as in the early days: coal from southeastern Ohio; iron ore from the Great Lakes region; steel from five different mills; aggregates from four quarries; plus chemicals, forest products, and grain. Here's a pair of 70-Ton Hoppers dressed in the Orange and Black livery typical of W&LE, with coal loads crafted by Hay Brothers.
Need specific load styles to suit your layout?     Hay Brothers produces many different and very realistic styles available separately.
We are proud to announce this bright new addition to our Hopper Car Fleet!  Not long after the 50-Ton, 2-Bay Hoppers were perfected, and with many Railroad improvements in trackage, springs, trucks, and couplers along with ever more powerful Steam Engines, the want for a bigger, more economical hopper to haul the burgeoning Coal Industry's product, led to the development of the 70-Ton Hopper.  Many variations were tried between the early 1920s and to well after WWII, featuring a diverse number of ribs, and panels of assorted sizes.  FT  has chosen the popular and common 9-Panel type for a Z Scale version as it can be more easily adapted to the tiny lettering and data needed for this size.  It's a 40' car, a swell Z size, no bigger than the smallest of the steel boxcars!  It employs FT 's own trucks and knuckle couplers with the smaller housing, Will's metal wheelsets, and for a realistic touch, Hay Brothers Custom Loads!  The first of this FT  5000 Series was painted for ATSF, SANTA FE, always a popular Railroad Hobby Line!
