Several predecessors, dating back to the 1820's, led finally to the Southern Railway by 1894. In the 1980's it merged with Norfolk and Western R.R. to become Norfolk Southern. A venerable Rail Line oft wearing a green color scheme on both steam and diesel engine alike, the SR ran freight and passenger trains from Richmond, VA, to Greenville, MS, and from Florida to Louisiana and all points between, living up to it's motto, "We Serve the South!"

The Chicago and Northwestern was often operating in severe cold throughout our Western Plains States.  A storied history of delivering goods to brave pioneer towns.  These models should make our Northwestern and Canadian Z hobbyists very happy, indeed!  The Chicago and North Western Transportation Company (CNW) was a Class 1 Railroad operating over 12,000 miles of track in seven states before retrenchment in the late 1970's.  Trackage in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming was divided between Union Pacific RR and CPRail (operated by Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern RR) in 1995. The Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway (CMO) or Omaha Road became part of the CNW Railway in 1882.  The C&NW leased the Omaha Road in 1957 and merged the company into itself in 1972.

The Waddell Coal Co. came into being in the late 1800's when their breaker was built in Winton, near Scranton, located in Pennsylvania's northern anthracite coal region. Originally serviced by the New York, Ontario and Western Railway, which operated in Northern NJ, Upstate NY, and Northeastern PA, improvements were made in the early 1900's and coal from the local mines was washed, sorted, and distributed by the O&W, as was milk and dairy products, mainly to the New York City metropolitan area. With the advent of new roads, trucking, and the decline of home-heating coal, the O&W and hence the Waddell Breaker fell into disrepair. By the late 1930's while the O&W neared bankruptcy, the Waddell Coal Co. continued to clean and distribute coal to rural areas along the rail line. In the early 1950's the Company bought five of the O&W's small ribbed twin-bay hoppers, and had the shops paint them in a striking orange, black and white scheme, to advertise and distribute their coal to local merchants. Although fires destroyed parts of the Waddell Breaker complex over the next twenty years, coal continued to be processed there through the 1980's! Demolished in 2003, a housing development is now planned for the site.

The  Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railway  (PWV) operated in the Pittsburgh, PA and Wheeling, WV areas. It was originally built as a Pittsburgh extension of the Wabash Railroad, and earned autonomy in 1908. In 1931 it became part of the "Alphabet Route," an independent consortium of Rail Lines conceived to link the Midwest USA (Chicago, St. Louis, and Great Lakes ports) to the Northeast USA (Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston), in order to compete with the larger Railroads (Erie, Pennsy, and New York Central) that had already established direct routes. The name "Alphabet Route" referred to the "alphabet soup" of initials used by members for their respective Rail Lines i.e.: Nickel Plate (NYC&StL), W&LE, P&WV, WM, RDG, CNJ, L&HR, and NYNH&H. Norfolk & Western Railway leased many of the Lines involved with the Alphabet Route in '64, and the P&WV was leased to the new spinoff Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway in 1990, just months before the N&W was merged into the Norfolk Southern Railway. The W&LE has trackage through Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania and leased CSX trackage after the Conrail splitup. W&LE lines interchange with three major Class I Railroads, CN, CSX and NS. Most 40's burnt orange paint schemes of the P&WV were repainted black during repairs after the early 50's, but some remained intact and could be seen through the 60's.

One of the most striking and exhausting "repaint" projects ever attempted after a major merger was that of the Chessie System ! It was so comprehensive that many yellow, blue and vermillion Chessie engines may still be seen in service today, despite the CSX ownership! I've combined two 33' Offset-Side 2-Bay Hopper models (WDW3005 and WDW3031) into a "Special" Collector 2-pk.#2 with all new, unique Reporting Numbers. As most of you know, the older B&O and C&O equipment was refurbished and repainted after the merger, but the original Designations and Reporting Numbers were kept. These models were released two years ago, but many of you either missed out or ordered just a few and were quickly "sold out!" I promised to release more of them, so here's a wonderful Z Scale FTCOL27 2-pk. #2 of work-a-day hoppers for post-WWII runners of Eastern USA trains. And a great addition to your hopper rosters and collections. One of the most popular names of the Railroad Hobby!

The New York Central Railroad (NYC), headquartered in New York City, utilized extensive trackage in the US states of NY, PA, OH, MI, IA, IL, and MA, plus additional trackage in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The railroad primarily connected New York and Boston in the East with Chicago and St.Louis in the Midwest along with the all the large intermediate cities in between. The NYC's Grand Central Station Terminal in New York City is one of its best known extant landmarks. Much NYC trackage followed rivers or lake shorelines, and having no significant grades influenced it's advertising and locomotive designs. The famous Water Level Route of the NYC, from New York City to "Upstate" was the first four-track long-distance railroad in the world.
In 1968 the NYC merged with its former rival, the Pennsylvania Railroad to form Penn Central (NYNH&H joined in 1969). That company soon went bankrupt, was taken over by the federal government merging into Conrail in 1976. Conrail was broken up in 1998, and portions of its system was transferred to both CSX and Norfolk Southern. Those companies' lines included the original New York Central main line, but outside that area it included lines that were never part of the New York Central system. CSX was able to take one of the most important main lines in the nation which runs from Buffalo, New York, to Chicago, Illinois, called the Chicago line. The Chicago double main line is one of only a couple US lines that connect the East and West coasts and runs over 200 trains a day with Toledo, Ohio, being the busiest crew change point on the entire CSX system.

After being involved with Z Scale Railroading for a decade, in 1998, William Dean Wright, "Uncle Will," decided to become a Distributor for this enticing hobby.  Thus, Full Throttle was born.  Eventually, affiliations with PennZee, Freudenreich, and Father Nature led to many promotional, photographic and marketing pursuits.  Along the way it became necessary to create our own trucks and couplers, and "Will's Metal Wheels" were popularized! With friendships of Hay Bros. Garage and NZT, new products and body-styles are on the work bench, today.  Full Throttle is very grateful for all the support given by you, our patrons, and offers this nifty 15-Year "Anniversary" Twin-Hopper 4-pk. in celebration!  Thanks! Faithfully, Will

Here's a nifty supplement for you WM fans.  It's a split Collector's Pack containing one of the Gray MoW gravel carriers and one of the typical Red coalers.  Both were issued before, but this COL Pack has new reporting numbers, of course!  Designed in 1960 by the N&W as the H-11 class, eventually the height was raised to 12' 3", giving it 3433 cubic feet and a weight capacity of 90-100 tons. Over 130,000 were built by Pullman, Greenville, and Trinity, with Bethlehem Steel and ACF supplying prefab kits to many railroads. The Western Maryland Railway (WM) operated in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, running through some of the most scenic vistas in the USA. It was primarily a coal hauling and freight railroad, with a small passenger train operation. The lumber trade was also important to the WM and it's fast freight service was appreciated by it's clients. In 1964, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) jointly filed for permission to acquire control of the Western Maryland and it became part of the Chessie System which, eventually in 1989, became part of CSXT. Here’s a Special Edition Western Maryland, gray MoW with gravel and a typical red coaler from Full Throttle/PENNZEE  with custom loads by Hay Brothers!

The Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) and Seaboard Air Line (SAL) were two great Southeastern USA Railroads. Long in competition, they joined forces in 1967 to form Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Acquiring the Piedmont and Northern RR shortly after, headquarters were in both Richmond, VA and Jacksonville, FL. The ACL with double track lines contributed greatly to Florida's economic growth and population, while the SAL hauled produce and goods through the entire South. In 1983 the SCL became Seaboard System RR after a merger with the Louisville and Nashville RR and Clinchfield RR. For some years prior, the SCL and L&N had been under common ownership and the company's railroads were known as the Family Lines System which consisted of the L&N, SCL, Clinchfield and West Point Routes. During this time, the railroads adopted the same paint schemes but continued to operate as separate railroads. In 1980, Family Lines System and Chessie System combined, evolving as Seaboard System and in 1986 finally became CSX Transportation. Here's two hoppers from the CSX past that would be comfortable in a consist with a myriad of Eastern USA rolling stock!

In 1995, the Burlington Northern RR merged with the ATSF RR to form the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. The new railroad began fully merged operations in 1996, and in 2005 its name was shortened to BNSF Railway. Many of the large 45-foot hoppers were owned by both Railroads. BNSF repainted or patched many of these hoppers with their BNSF "SWOOSH" logo and they continue to be in service, today! Still a common sight on American rails currently, over 130,000 of the 90/100-ton, 45-foot, three-bay hoppers were produced in the 1960’s. Many different rail lines and manufacturers built these popular haulers, Bethlehem Steel and ACF supplying prefabricated kits to myriad railroads.

The Baltimore and Ohio and the Chesapeake and Ohio were two vast and prolific early Railroads originating from the Chesapeake Bay Area of the Eastern USA. Successful and renowned for Freight and Passenger Services far into our National Heartland, and over the years acquiring the rights to many smaller Rail Lines, they merged themselves in the latter part of the 20th century to form the Chessie System, which eventually morphed into the great CSX Transportation Corporation and Railroad. The B&O and C&O were both eminent haulers of coal from the Appalachian Mt. chain of the Eastern USA, and unloaded at the most prominent docks on the East Coast, for export around the world. Here's a Twin Hopper of each Railroad from before and just after their merger to form the Chessie System!

With the expanding economy and industry after WWI, the necessity for larger coal cars than the typical 50-ton hoppers became apparent. Coal-fired electric plants became omnipresent and improvements in railcar technology led to a 70-ton, 3-bay hopper car, useful throughout the 20th Century!
The Virginian Railway (VGN) was created in 1907 to haul quality "smokeless" Bituminous coal from previously untapped southern West Virginia mines through Virginia to it's Atlantic ports at Hampton Roads! With it's fleet of Fairbanks-Morse diesels, the VGN became the model of efficiency, and admired by the N&W RR, merged with them in 1959. Eventually, as part of the Norfolk Southern, the VGN was mothballed in 2015 because of the lack in demand for coal shipments.
Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway (WE) is a regional freight railroad providing service in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. W&LE lines interchange with three major railroads (Canadian National Railway, CSX Transportation, and Norfolk Southern Railway). Many of it's major commodities remain the same as in the early days: coal, iron ore, steel and aggregates.

The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) was founded in 1846. Commonly referred to as "Pennsy," the PRR was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Pennsy, an early giant, set standards for railroading in North America!
In 1933, the New Jersey Transit Authority convinced the Pennsylvania and Reading Railroads to consolidate in order to run their routes through Central and Southern New Jersey, thus creating the Pennsylvania ~ Reading Seashore Lines (PRSL). PRSL accumulated a small fleet of EMD GP-38s to carry freight and passengers throughout NJ, especially to the summer seashore spots of Atlantic City, Ocean City, Wildwood, and Cape May. Doodlebugs and RDCs ultimately became common passenger carriers for the Line. PRSL properties were conveyed to CONRAIL in 1976.

After WWII, American Car and Foundry (ACF) designed a tank-type "Center Flow" covered hopper car. Here was a "Freight Car for the Future," ready to transport sugar, cement, sand, salt, fertilizers, many types of grains, coke, starch, feeds, chemicals and plastics! Some Railroads of our Northwest Plains experimented with Aluminum bodies to cut down on costs of interstate grain shipping.
Great Northern Railway was a colorful transcontinental Rail Line (1857-1970) which ran from Chicago northward along the USA/Canada border, serving both nations, and to Washington, Oregon and California on our West Coast. It's famous herald was of a mountain goat within a circle. It eventually merged with NP, CB&Q, and SP&S to form the Burlington Northern Railroad until 1996 when the BN merged with ATSF to become BNSF.
The Burlington Northern Railroad was formed in 1970 from the merger of four large railroads, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Spokane, Portland and Seattle, and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy. It serviced the Central US, most of the Midwestern States, and the Pacific Northwest. It purchased the ATSF in 1996 to become BNSF, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, one of the four major railroads in the USA!

A proponent of feed supplements for animal husbandry, Dale Wilmore McMillen founded Wayne Feeds and Central Soya producing a concentrate of soy protein, vitamins and minerals lacking in regular feed. Wayne Feeds merged with American Milling Co., a soybean crushing mill, in 1929 to form Allied Mills. In 1894, William H. Danforth began producing feed for various farm animals under the name Purina Mills. The predominant brand for each animal was generally referred to as "Chow"; hence there was "Purina" Horse, Dog, Cat, Rabbit, Pig and even Monkey "Chow". in 1902, he merged with university professor Webster Edgerly, a producer of breakfast cereals, to form the "Ralston Purina Co.". In 1998 it was purchased by Koch Industries and in 2001 by Land O'Lakes. Here are two covered cylindrical hoppers which carried these products to distributors across the USA.
