ALL NEW TOOLING & LOADS
A new body style, the 3400 Series!  When helpful and profitable uses for woodchips were realized after mid-century, and they transcended being "trash," there was a scramble to figure out a way to transport them via the railroads.  Old hopper cars, both ribbed and offset were pressed into service.  The addition of "extended tops" made the transport of the lighter-than-coal chiploads effective and productive.  All manner of tops were conceived, from wood planking and braced ply-boards to welded steel sheeting and scrap siding.  This new woodchip hopper represents the use of older refurbished offset hoppers with a welded sheet-steel extension.  It's very dramatic and a swell addition to the FT Hopper Portfolio!

A woodchip hopper from the famous and enormous ROCK ISLAND LINE.  Renown in song, it maintained a modern system throughout it's history until fierce competition in the 1970's. One source of income after mid-century was woodchips, once considered trash!  The RI served essentially the entire mid-USA (14 plus States) and in doing so, ran through the forests of mid-America.  It's rolling stock would have been seen everywhere throughout our "Heartland!"  Here's a 2-pk. of the new offset woodchippers from the traditional red, white and black RI era, with realistic loads created by Hay Brothers.

The "Rock Island Line" was a huge railroad operating in the American Heartland. It stretched across ARK, CO, IL, IA, KS, MO, NB, NM, OK, SD, TX and reached into MN and TN! It was the first RR to connect Chicago, IL, with the Mississippi River, and jointly, with the Southern Pacific RR, ran a passenger service to the West Coast. Challenged by CB&Q's similar but farther reaching routes, Western Railroad competition, and increased operating costs, Rock Island maintenance had so degraded that when the Union Pacific RR pursued a merger in the 1970s, RI was no longer an attractive partner! A last attempt at survival was begun including a change of name to The ROCK, an improved MoW, modern motive power, and a new color scheme from the traditional red, black and white to blue, black and white. Despite the initiative, too late, a once great railroad, praised in song and print, sadly, was forced to liquidate in 1980. The Union Pacific RR by merger with Missouri Pacific RR now owns most of what was Rock Island. Full Throttle presents a pair of ROCK Offset-Side Woodchip Hoppers, repainted during the rebuilding era, with realistic loads created by Hay Brothers.

The Northern Pacific Railway (NP) operated in the Western USA along the Canadian border. By 1883 the main line ran all the way from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean, serving a large area including extensive trackage in the states of Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin. Additionally, NP had international lines to Winnipeg, Manitoba and south eastern British Columbia, Canada. NP, together with the Great Northern RR, gained control of the CB&Q RR, thus access to Chicago, the central Middle West and Texas. Added was the SP&S RR, an important route through Washington State. The NP was among the first USA railroads to adopt widespread use of diesel power beginning with GM's FTs in 1944. In 1970 the NP, GN, CB&Q and SP&S formed the Burlington Northern Railroad. One source of income after mid-century was woodchips, once considered trash! Their use in paper production, bedding on the farm, mulches, playground surfacing, forest fire prevention, and alternative fuel made them a profitable haul. Old hopper cars were refurbished, given top-extensions and pressed into service. All manner of extensions were conceived, from wood planking and braced ply boards to welded steel sheeting and scrap parts from irreparable cars, to increase capacities for this lighter load.

The UNION PACIFIC, headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, is the largest Railroad Network in the USA, operating 8,000 locomotives over 32,000 route-miles west of the Mississippi River! Begun in 1862, UP grew by acquiring, one-by-one, almost all the large Rail Companies of the Western States. UP and competitor BNSF have a duopoly on all transcontinental freight rail lines in the USA. One source of income after mid-20th century was woodchips, once considered trash! Here's a pair of woodchip hoppers with custom loads by Hay Brothers.

The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), known as CPRail  (CP) between 1968 and 1996, has a rail network that stretches from Vancouver to Montreal, and also serves major cities in the USA such as Minneapolis, Chicago, and New York City. Its headquarters are in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  Originally built between eastern Canada and British Columbia between 1881 and 1885, it is Canada's first transcontinental railway.  Now CP is primarily a freight railway, since it's passenger services were eliminated in 1986 after being assumed by VIA Rail Canada in 1978.

The Green Bay and Western Railroad (GBW) served central Wisconsin for almost 100 years before it was absorbed into the Wisconsin Central in 1993. The GBW was also known as the Green Bay Route. Wisconsin Central was purchased by Canadian National in 2001. One source of income after mid-century was Woodchips, once considered trash! Their use in paper production, bedding on the farm, mulches, playground surfacing, forest fire prevention, and an alternative fuel made them a profitable haul. Old hopper cars were refurbished, given top-extensions and pressed into service. Chartered by the state of Kentucky in 1850, the Louisville and Nashville carried freight and passengers continuously for 132 years becoming a premier Southern Railroad. It's network reached from OH and MO to LA and FL. In 1902 J.P. Morgan delivered the L&N to the Atlantic Coast Line RR and it's successor, the Seaboard Coast Line purchased all remaining L&N shares in 1971, while AMTRAK assumed the passenger service. By 1982, Seaboard System Railroad absorbed the L&N and in 1986 changed it's name to CSX Transportation (CSX) which now operates former L&N rail lines. One source of income after mid-century was woodchips, once considered trash! Their use in paper production, bedding on the farm, mulches, playground surfacing, forest fire prevention, and alternative fuel made them a profitable haul. Old hopper cars were refurbished, given top-extensions and pressed into service. Great Northern Railway was a colorful transcontinental Rail Line (1857-1970) which ran from Chicago northward along the USA/Canada border, serving both nations, and to Washington, Oregon and California on our West Coast. It's famous herald was of a mountain goat within a circle. It eventually merged with NP, CB&Q, and SP&S to form the Burlington Northern Railroad until 1996 when the BN merged with ATSF to become BNSF.
